On Wednesday the 17th of July we held our first come & try session of All-Abilities wheelchair basketball!
Sophie Bickford, Project Coordinator at Sports Focus partnered with Cassidy McLean, Basketball Development Coordinator at Red Energy Arena, to coordinate two free introductory sessions, aiming to identify if there was a want and need for All-Abilities wheelchair basketball to be an ongoing opportunity. The first session was a huge success with 19 participants on the court, from several local Disability Support Service groups and schools! With Caleb Logan coaching the session, the group practiced ball skills and shooting hoops, with plenty of free time to allow flexibility for the participants to choose how they wanted to participate.
Reflecting on the session, Sophie said “there was smiles all around, every participant thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and the atmosphere was incredibly welcoming and safe. It’s such a fun and inclusive sport, and such an exciting time to try it with the Paralympics approaching! It will be fantastic to see how the second come & try session goes, and hopefully this can become a weekly All-Abilities opportunity.”
Our next free come & try session is 10am Tuesday the 23rd of July at Red Energy Arena, where wheelchairs, a hot drink and snacks are provided, and everyone of All-Abilities are welcome!
