Sports Focus receives Change Our Game funding to help “Equal the Contest”

State Government Change Our Game grant sees local sports organisation collaborate with filmmaker to create change
Sports Focus is among 119 community clubs and organisations who have been successful in securing funding from the Victorian State Government’s Change our Game Community Activation Program. The funding will see Sports Focus collaborate with local filmmaker Mitch Nivalis to develop their documentary feature film Equal the Contest into a workshop that will continue to educate community sports clubs and advance inclusion and gender equality.
Lauren Fawcett, Club Development & Special Projects Lead at Sports Focus says “We are excited to be working with Mitch in further developing the Equal the Contest documentary. We believe every club can take something from watching it and if it leads to conversations about making our local sporting environments more welcoming, safe and inclusive then that can only be a good thing”.
Equal the Contest, which has over the last year screened to thousands of people around Australia and the world, will be re-edited into a 20 minute version focusing on the positive actions of the Mt Alexander Falcons football club. The project, which will also have a workshop component, will be delivered to 6 selected sports clubs as part of a pilot project, allowing clubs to facilitate their own discussions and create a plan to move their club towards a greater understanding of gender equity and what this looks like in action.
“It’s an incredible opportunity to focus the message of the film, which has been creating such powerful conversations to date, and package it specifically for community sports clubs. This makes the film easier for clubs to gather players, volunteers and members to learn about gender equity in sport, in a really engaging way.” says filmmaker Mitch Nivalis.
Once complete, the film and workshop will be available for sports clubs via the film’s website
