Set The Standard: Building Safer, More Inclusive Community Sport

In sports clubs across Victoria, coaches and leaders don’t just shape performance — they shape culture.

It’s the everyday moments that matter.
What gets laughed off. What gets ignored. What gets called out.

Racism in sport isn’t always loud. It can show up as “banter”, exclusion, or silence. And when it does, it pushes people away — from sport, from connection, and from the sense of belonging that supports health and wellbeing.

Set The Standard is about practical leadership.
Small steps. Better habits. Stronger expectations.

Because when everyone belongs, everyone benefits.

What is Set The Standard?

Set The Standard is a campaign by VicHealth designed to prevent and reduce racism in community sport.

It supports coaches and club leaders with practical tools and training to help build culturally safe, welcoming environments where everyone can participate.

Why it matters

Community sport plays a vital role in supporting:

  • Physical activity

  • Mental wellbeing

  • Social connection

But racism and exclusion can push people out — limiting access to these important health benefits.

Key insights highlight the challenge:

  • Only 24.5% of Victorians aged 15+ meet physical activity guidelines

  • 56% of participants have experienced or witnessed racism in community sport

  • 20% reduced participation after these experiences

Racism is not just a social issue — it’s a public health issue, linked to stress, anxiety and long-term health impacts.
