Lawn Bowls for the Karen Community

The South Bendigo Bowls Club is working in partnership with Sports Focus and Bendigo Community Health Services to engage the local Karen community in lawn bowls.

The Karen (pronounced kah-REN) are an ethnic group who have migrated to Australia as refugees from Burma and Thailand, and Bendigo is home to more than 4,000 Karen people.

South Bendigo Bowls Club have been keen to engage the community in lawn bowls after a member of the club attended an Understanding Karen Culture session last year.

This has since led to Sports Focus and Bendigo Community Health Services working with the club to host their own Understanding Karen Culture session for their club members, and sourcing funding from the City of Greater Bendigo to support a participation opportunity for the Karen community.

South Bendigo Bowls Club have just hosted their first Come and Try Bowls session for local Karen leaders to introduce them to the sport and this will lead into additional sessions for the broader Karen community.
