International Day of People with Disability 2024

On Tuesday the 3rd of December 2024, Sports Focus joined Mount Alexander Shire Council for their International Day of People with Disability event!

Sports Focus staff Laura Bradley and Sophie Bickford held a stall at the event, showcasing all of the local inclusive sporting opportunities that are available for people with a disability. They had lots of valuable discussions with locals, support service providers, local council members, and the other stall holders – all about inclusive sport, the work we do at Sports Focus, and future opportunities within Mount Alexander Shire.

They also carried out a “Sticky Dot Activity”, which is a very easy and fun way to collect data. There was 23 different sports and physical activities on a board, and each participant was given three sticky dots. The participants could choose which sport or activity they’d love to participate in, and place their dots on their choices.

This information helps Laura and Sophie identify gaps within current inclusive sporting opportunities and gives direction to where support could be provided to help facilitate a new all-abilities sports program. Utilsing this type of data collection ensures that we’re consulting with the population in focus, and taking their preferences into account. The most popular options were golf, cricket, and dancing!
